McGarvey Fall Update 2022

Haiti News

James 5:16 reminds us that, “The prayer of the righteous person is powerful in what it can achieve.” (James 5:16 CEB) In this season of challenging times in Haiti, there is always hope on the horizon through our prayers and actions. There is talk of international aid to improve the security for the Haitian people, but there is also a segment of the population that does not want outside assistance to deal with the powerful gangs, ineffective government officials and outmatched police force. It is certainly a challenging situation that continues to evade a clear solution. Haiti needs the prayers of the faithful to resolve the issues and restore peace across the nation.

We are thankful that God continues to provide for the children and families in our care during these tough times. Food and fuel are scarce, leading to a huge increase in those in desperate situations. We’re still able to communicate with our Haitian staff on a fairly regular basis and help them deal with the challenges.

Travel Update

In travel news, we had a great visit with our kids and some old friends in Arizona. We had some rare downtime and enjoyed our time away. Now we’re in Rochester for a week to visit with more family and friends before heading back to Florida.

For those in the Rochester area, we have scheduled our next Open House at Panera Bread in Penfield for this Friday from 5-8PM. We would love to see as many of you as possible! If you’d like, you can RSVP on our Facebook event page, or you can just stop by any time between 5 and 8PM to say hello, and perhaps grab a drink or a bite to eat. Here’s the address:

Summer in the States

This has been a year of the unexpected for many of us. We never expected to be spending the summer in the states and working remotely to keep things moving forward in Jacmel. We have so much to do as we constantly plan and implement next steps to equip and prepare the kids on our campus for next steps in life. As you can imagine, this is a constant process of evaluating the past and making adjustments for the future. We’re thankful for video meeting capabilities and other forms of technology to keep us connected and moving forward!

Some days we spend 6-7 hours in Zoom meetings!

Haiti is still dealing with the Covid-19 virus and continues to restrict travel into, out from and within the country. There are some flights scheduled most weeks to allow people to leave Haiti, and after several months with a travel ban into Haiti, there’s talk about opening the airport again. The requirements for those traveling into the country are not clear yet, but we’ll be watching for opportunities to return.

The Countdown Begins…Heading for Haiti

It’s hard to believe a month has passed since our last update. There are so many areas that need our attention before we move.  Do we keep the house?  What should we take with us?  What should we do with everything else?  Do we keep our cars?  What do we do about health insurance?  How much money do we need to live in Haiti?  What other expenses do we need to include in our budget?  How do we share our vision and financial goals with our friends and family?  Those are just a few handfuls of the questions that we are facing.

So what have we accomplished so far?  We’ve submitted our proposed Continue reading “The Countdown Begins…Heading for Haiti”

2016 – a year of change…and promises of more to come

Looking back at 2016, it has been quite a year.  As someone who prefers change to come a little at a time, this would typically be classified as a rough year. Who knew what God would have in store for us and how He would gently lead us down a path to huge change?

In a quest to find more meaningful work, a job change in April was a great move.  Leaving friends behind at an old job is always hard, but moving Continue reading “2016 – a year of change…and promises of more to come”
